SAGE is a member of the mint family Lamiaceae and native to the Mediterranean region, though it has been naturalized in many places throughout the world, such as North America.

Burning sage was practiced by Native Americans (and perhaps Ancient Greeks, Egyptians, and Romans). The intent (varies by source) was either a spiritual ritual, a purification practice, a healing rite, an attempt to rid spaces of insects, or to “dispense negative energy.” Burning sage, also known as smudging or cleansing, is an ancient indigenous North American spiritual ritual. Scientifically, it has been established that white sage (Salvia apiana) is rich in compounds that activate certain receptors in the brain.

Now because not everyone might a fan of “smoking” their house, there are some other alternatives, such as sprays, essential oil, etc, which might have same properties of cleansing.
